Coburn takes first win as weather wrecks schedule

Despite efforts to advance the schedule, rain put a premature end to racing in round seven of the Extreme Dirt Track ATVA Nationals, handing up-and-coming pro Michael Coburn (#038, Honda), of Garretson, South Dakota his first win.

Coburn, one of the youngest Pro riders is making a name for himself in just his second year of Extreme Dirt Track racing.

Promoter and race shop owner Rich Hetrick moved up the program due to the threatening weather, but rain brought an end to racing. This meant that the Pro class winners were determined by finishing positions from qualifying heats.

Coburn pulled the hole shot in his qualifier and was followed by Brian Ace (#338 Honda), Mocksville, North Carolina and Frank Batista (#13 Honda), Riverdale, California in third.

Transponder scoring provided the lap times and qualifier times, with the fastest qualifier going to Coburn and first place.

The next-fastest qualifier was Shane Hitt (#5, Honda), of Buckhannon, West Virginia, pulling the holeshot and taking first place, followed by Danny McGraw (#143,Honda), Hale, Missouri and Brandon Shipman (#93 Honda), Henley, Missouri in third.

The next fastest was Harold Goodman (#708, Honda) Romulus, Michigan, Mitch Reynolds (#137, Suzuki), Greenbrier, Arkansas in second and Zac Willett (#47 Honda), Henderson, Kentucky third.

Final standings were Coburn first, Hitt second and Goodman third.

Hitt's finish in front of Goodman gives Hitt a two-point lead going into the last round, where the National Championship will be decided.
