The stay, which extends through May 1, 2011, follows a unanimous vote by Acting Chairwoman Nancy Nord and Commissioner Thomas Moore.

New lead law jeopardizes National 4-H and other ATV safety training
A new law banning the sale of youth-model ATVs and motorcycles because of lead concerns led to sad consequences for a group of 4-H youth who were attending an annual meeting recently at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center just outside Washington, D.C. The training was canceled.

Recreational groups join forces to improve trail safety and enjoyment of public land
A group of national and state trail advocacy organizations representing equestrian, OHV, and bicycle interests recently completed a collaborative effort to develop a new guide called “Sharing Our Trails – A Guide to Trail Safety and Enjoyment." The guide is intended to be used in a variety of ways such as incorporation in trail brochures, magazine articles and trail education programs of all types. 

Consumer Product Safety Commission set to vote by Friday to postpone enforcement of lead law provisions for youth-model motorcycle and ATVs
Acting Chairwoman Nancy Nord and Commissioner Thomas Moore, the two members of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), are scheduled to vote by Friday, May 1, on whether to delay enforcement of a lead law that currently bans the sale of youth-model motorcycles and ATVs, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports. Specific details of the ballot have not yet been released.

U.S. House committee to hold hearing on closing 24 million acres of public land
The U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources will hold a hearing on May 5 to consider a bill that would designate more than 24 million acres of public lands in western states as Wilderness or Wilderness Preservation System land. If approved by the full Congress, the measure would close off more than 24 million acres in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming to off-highway vehicle (OHV) riders.
