New
York is one of the toughest states in the nation to find a good place to ride,
but there are places to ride.
Rocky Roost park near Monterey, New York, is one of the places, and is a gem.
It's a 100-acre facility with a woods loop and MX track for ATVers and dirtbikers.
The
owners call it "an entertaining experience for riders of all skill levels from
pee wee to 500cc vet pilots.''
The terrain includes motocross, grass track, rocks, roots, off-camber trail, steep rises and drops, jumps, and more.
Rocky Roost features a Grand National Cross Country-level A-loop that is tough, entertaining and scenic, the owner says. The three-mile course will take you up steep hills, through a muddy off-camber, down steep slopes and onto a logging road or two.
The owners say this run is a real workout even though it's only three-miles in length.
"You will feel like you just shredded 20 miles of gnarly trail!" the owner says.
Nearly all the rides around the loop are guided rides.
The 1.2-mile MX track is described like this:
1. 50-foot table top
2. 38-foot double (right out of a corner)
3. 4-foot rolling drop jump.
4. Step up right hand turn with a tree. Old creek bed, another right turn.
5. 5-foot bank jump (Elevation change, old creek bed)
6. 10-foot mini-table (blip and hop)
7. Medium-size table top
8. Big lefthand berm.
9. Sweeping forward rush, then hard brakes.
10. Choppy hardpan approach to woods
11. Small step up
12. Rutty right hand turn
13. 5-foot step up (old creek bed again)
14. 6-foot drop, big left, 5-foot step up
15. Nascar-style S-turn approach to tabletop.
Rocky Roost is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the weekends all year. Weekdays by appointment.
Rocky
Roost is a family park so no alcohol is allowed.
Also, helmets, boots and full pants are required. Gloves and chest protectors are recommended. No shorts, sneakers or baggy clothing are allowed.
Running boards or nerf bars are recommended on quads.
All riders must stay on Rocky Roost property. If you get caught off the property you could face stiff fines.
All silencers must be in good working order. All trails are one-way traffic, so don't go down trails marked as "wrong way'' or someone could get hurt.
All machines must be in good working order. That means no duct tape or bailing wire, no leaks or drooling motors. Brakes must work!
A release must be signed for riders under 18.
Primitive camping is available for $5 per night, per tent.
RV parking is available for $10 a night. RV rental is available in a gated paddock for $50 a night.
To get to Rocky Roost, exit 42 off I-86. It's then 10 miles to Rocky Roost (Monterey) on the left, near the CR 16 and CR 22 split.
From Watkins Glen, take Route 414 to the traffic light, turn right. Rocky Roost is about 10 miles down the road, about seven miles past the Watkins Glen Raceway.
