Daniel Boone Trail
Hyden, Kentucky
Southeastern Kentucky is a place you definitely need to check out.
Everywhere you look in the area, new and exciting places to ride are opening
up.
Daniel Boone Trail is definitely one you should add to your list. Where else can you ride over 100 miles of trails and see bull elk, up close and personal?
Contrary to what some will tell you, stay on your ATV with the engine
running and you can ride right up to the elk. If you are on foot, the elk
see you as a threat and will head for the hills.
Speaking of hills, there are plenty, with views from the top of ridges that make you stop to take it all in. There are endless valleys, twisting trails and challenges for every skill level of rider.
Plans are in the works to add more and more trails.
When you head out to Daniel Boone Trail you will definitely appreciate all the different overnight options. Willie Begley Memorial RV campground at the trailhead has 29 RV slots with electric, water, and cable TV, and sewer hookups are in the works. In addition there are bathrooms and showers. Rates are only $21 per night.
No RV and want the comforts of a motel? Hazard, Kentucky, just 20 miles away, has a number of hotels, restaurants and grocery stores.
The easiest way to find Daniel Boone Trail in London, Kentucky, is to take exit 41 on Interstate 75. Then go east on Daniel Boone Parkway to exit 44. If you are coming in from another direction, it will be fun and scenic but will take a little more time.
The trails are open to ATVs, motorcycles and utility vehicles. You will need a permit that can be picked up at the campground check-in building.
Day passes are $5, three-day passes cost $12 and an annual pass is available for just $30.
Kentucky law requires ATV riders to wear helmets. Please stay on marked trails. All trails are shared with hikers, horseback riders and bicyclists, so proper trail courtesy is standard practice and will keep the trails open for years to come.
