Federal government extends deadline for comments on proposed sales of public lands
The Bush administration announced it is extending the deadline to May 1 for the public to comment on its proposal to sell U.S. Forest Service land to help pay for rural schools.
The earlier deadline was March 30. The Bush administration is looking at selling a total of 300,000 acres in 35 states, ranging from 76,000 acres in California to 80 acres in Wisconsin.
The sales are expected to raise about $800 million over five years.
The ATVA and AMA are monitoring the plans to sell public land to ensure that the sales will not impact off-road riding opportunities, which are already dwindling nationwide.
Comments must be received by May 1. You may submit comments by e-mail to SRS_Land_Sales@fs.fed.us, by fax to (202) 205-1604, or by mail to USDA Forest Service, SRS Comments, Lands 4S, 1400 Independence Ave. SW, Mailstop 1124, Washington DC 20250-0003.
The U.S. Forest Service notes that electronic submission of comments is preferred, and that if you submit your comments by e-mail or fax, then you don't need to send a paper copy by mail.
