Map It or Lose It
It's critical that you get involved in the U.S. Forest Service effort to map riding routes in forests nationwide.
It's so important for saving riding trails, in fact, that Russ Ehnes of the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council, John Bongiozanni of the Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Coalition, and videographer Lloyd Liebetrau want to make it easy for you.
With the blessing of Forest Service officials, they are collaborating on a DVD available to off-roaders that explains how to use global positioning systems to map trails, and then how to present that information to the Forest Service.
"It's critical that off-highway vehicle recreationists are involved in the Forest Service process, particularly in letting the Forest Service know where they ride," said NOHVCC Executive Director Ehnes. "Because if they ride on a trail and that trail doesn't make it into the Forest Service inventory, the trail will be closed.
"If OHV recreationists tell the Forest Service where their favorite trails are, they may be closed,'' Ehnes added. ``But if they don't tell the Forest Service where they are, the trails will be closed."
The DVD is available to anyone who needs to map trails or roads for any land-use process.
To get a DVD, contact NOHVCC after October 1 at (800) 348-6487, or e-mail trailhead@nohvcc.org.
