Federal safety agency, Kawasaki recall ATVs

Click to enlargeOct. 24, 2003 – Kawasaki, in cooperation with the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission, is recalling its Prairie and KXF700 "V-Force" ATVs for safety reasons.

The Prairies are being recalled because the lower front suspension arm can separate from the steering assembly, resulting in a loss of steering control and posing a serious risk of injury to the rider. Some 75,000 units are affected.

The recall includes both two-wheel and four-wheel drive versions of the Prairie 300 and 400 in model years 1997 to 2000 that were sold between September 1996 and December 2000.

Consumers should stop using the ATVs immediately and contact their Kawasaki dealer to schedule an appointment for a free inspection, replacement of the pinch bolt or repair of damaged parts. For more information, contact your Kawasaki dealer or call Kawasaki toll-free at (866) 802-9381 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Pacific Time Monday through Friday. You can also visit the Kawasaki website at www.kawasaki.com.

The KFX700 "V-Force" ATVs are being recalled because the throttle cable adjuster on the carburetor can loosen during operation, causing it to stick. That can cause the rider to lose control and possibly crash.

About 3,000 units are affected. They were sold from March 2003 through June 2003.

Consumers should stop riding the ATV and immediately contract their Kawasaki dealer or call Kawasaki toll-free at (866) 802-9381 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Pacific Time Monday through Friday. Kawasaki is directly notifying owners of these ATVs about the recall.
